I was told this week that offering I.T. services to small and medium-sized enterprises cover a really wide range of business types. I don’t disagree. This led me to think about the businesses I was trying to target my I.T. consulting services at. Would my solution and service offerings fit a very broad set of companies? The definition of an SME is that they could be ten people in a company and up to a maximum of two hundred and fifty employees. How would what I was offering going to fit with these sized businesses? My business life had been providing I.T. solutions to large corporate companies across the world.
My services are based on real solutions, not homemade or a ragbag of an untried and tested combination of semi-related ideas. All my life I’ve worked with leading providers of Financial, General Admin and Sales, Human Resources, Payroll, Benefits and Pension providers. Mostly, if not all of the providers I work with now are listed on a stock exchange around the globe. They are all very successful software and service companies.
My testament is, I have built applications in my early days. I have updated applications as requirements have changed. I have implemented applications. I have worked on behalf of business functions, enabling change. I have planned and executed the recovery of I.T sites, offsite. I have enacted business continuity plans. I have managed projects in over 25 countries. I have had fun in Vegas while delivering training! I’ve have managed acquisition integrations. I have performed due-diligence of banks, and you name it and I can say I’ve done it. I have worked with audit teams to bring fraudsters to justice. I have completed compliance, risk and security reviews. I have managed projects and programmes of large change initiatives.
The only providers I now use are ones which can help SME’s with their services and solutions. The ones which can jump-start new projects and processes with pre-built sets of templates, add-ons, and services. They have their reputations to protect. Stakeholders to please and money to make. Wherever people are working, they need to work dynamically. Even more so as the world around us is changing even more rapidly due to the pandemic virus. People need to be empowered, enabled to plan, adapt, and get things done.
So, with this in mind, I’m comfortable to be offering services and solutions which will enable the SME businesses to manage change and to do it successfully. SME’s are faced in theory with huge challenges that large corporations can overcome by throwing monies and bodies at it. Communication is key for the small business owner. With limited resources and small budgets, change initiatives must be successful.
Tools, to enable communications during projects or events can make the difference. I’m a strong believer that the communication plan is vital to the overall success of these enhancements. The communications plan should be upfront during the initial planning phase. A real dialogue will reduce the resistance to change. Thereby limiting and reducing the number of project issues and failures throughout the process. Simply put ask someone how to do it, and they move from resistor to active participant in the process.
The collaboration will give the small business owners the reason to get up in the morning and to start working. Getting up and running fast is key to immediate business needs. Addressing these needs with streamlined solutions is part of my aims. Using providers with the same ethos as mine is why I know the SMEs can bridge the gap and be successful. My consulting is here to help them realise the advantages of working with collaborators, like myself.

Some business people consistently meet their performance targets by dealing with the right issue in the right order. The qualities that a do-it now person possesses lead to a reputation for reliability and for being able to complete actions successfully, on time, and with the minimum of stress. Do it now people create and maintain excellent relationships with their team, colleagues, and business partners. Knowing your objectives, be ruthless in avoiding unnecessary work. Focus on your aims. Document the objectives. Be smart.
