June 2020 Review

I’ve spent the month of June during the extended lock down, creating content to explain my business I.T. services and solutions. My brother Roger Smith has also joined the fold and you can read about him as well. I’ve also had a bit of fun writing a Sunday Morning Coffee column. I am an I.T. Consultant professional, everyone can use a little help from a designated professional. It’s been a busy month sharing our knowledge and experiences.

7th June, 2020 – Confessions of a 70’s Computer Operator

When I started out in computing in the late seventies, I was a trainee junior operator. My job involved putting tapes into tape decks; exchanging disk drives that looked like the Star Trek Enterprise; emptying the printer and restacking it with fresh paper; putting some operating commands into the operating console; and generally keeping the place clean for visitors. We were also asked to be the night time building security team. No extra pay was forthcoming. Read more of Confessions of a 70’s Computer Operator

14th June, 2020 – Banking On a Home Run

Imagine a newly acquired bank that resided in a foreign land. It was like landing on the moon this time. Along came three not so wise men to discuss the changes that would need to take place. Little did we know of the caravan that would turn up the following day, with their own hidden agendas. Read more of ‘Banking On a Home Run’

21st June, 2020 – Are Your Emails Safe?

I was disturbed to read that some small business owners still send confidential data files over email. Your data is a valuable asset, one to be cherished. Leaving it in plain sight for anyone to see is asking for it to be stolen. Why risk losing their business and data?

28th June, 2020 – Project Space Unfit For Habitation

Today, I’m remembering a project I worked on. Over time the fond memories have blocked out some of the bad ones. This is a lighthearted view of some of my obscure observations I can recall. No one needs to worry about being names or shamed, that is not my objective.

Pro-Tip – Ask a Professional

Cooking?

Pro-Tips - Ask a professional
Photo by Marley Clovelly on Pexels.com

The other day my niece who is fifteen was cooking tea for the family. Now, she is a very good cook and is really engaged in becoming a foodie. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a number of gourmet delights during the virus and lock down. Recently, she came to me while cooking with a plastic bottle of cider and asked me to open it for her. She doesn’t have the strength yet, to open it and I did. It made me think of all the small businesses who struggle with information technology, not because they can’t learn. they just don’t have the time too.

Pro-Tip – No, it’s nothing to do with golf or any other sport. It’s me dipping into my bags of tricks and sharing some best practice from my past. While I’m at it “Do you feel you never have enough time?”. Spend time exactly how you save money, by not spending it on luxuries or indulgent tasks. This time I talk about Project Go-Live Decision Making. Read more about ‘Go-Live Decision Making’

When it comes to managing the different aspects of your business, an IT consultant can help with many different facets. As a business leader, you are in charge of all aspects of your business. You may have to tend to many different things you would rather not have to. This may include, being the administrator, salesperson, marketing lead, and even in charge of Information Technology (IT). Taking one or more of these jobs that don’t quite relate directly to your business can help you focus on the things that matter most.

Hiring an IT Consultant can be beneficial to your business, but finding one can be a task in its own.
